Sullivan County's attorney ticketed for blocking road near Woodstock;motivation

unknown

BETHEL -- The attorney for Sullivan County was arrested after he blocked a road near the Woodstock concert site with his car, State Police said.

Ira Cohen, 52, was arrested by State Police in Liberty and charged with disorderly conduct, State Police Capt. Alan Martin said Saturday.

According to Martin, Cohen blocked the road twice and tried to challenge police. Martin would not say what Cohen's motivation was, but said the attorney's behavior was ``in typical Woodstock fashion.''

Cohen was not detained, only ticketed and released, Martin said.

Sullivan County District Attorney Stephen Lungen, a friend and colleague of Cohen, received a phone call from Cohen two hours before he was arrested Friday evening. According to Lungen, Cohen informed him of what he planned to do. Lungen said he then notified the police. Lungen would not comment on why Cohen chose to protest.

``That's the last person we would expect to challenge the police,'' Lungen said. The district attorney added that he was surprised and disappointed by Cohen's actions.

As county attorney, Cohen is responsible for handling all county civil litigation.

There were no other arrests or protests as hundreds gathered at the site this past weekend to commemorate the 28th anniversary of the Woodstock concert.
