(BLOOMINGBURG) - As I read the paper last week, I see that one of Sulivan County's own, Mr. Alan Gerry, has stepped up to the plate and has taken it upon himself to try to save Sullivan County from one of its own worst enemies, its' elected officials.
Citizens, you should rally around this man. He is doing what he can to save your county from desolation.
It is time to abandon the Alan Scott mentality of politics, extract heads from the sand and get down to bringing people back to Sullivan County for the Summer tourist trade. We need to institute a yearly trade in tourism, and with a center for performing arts or a museum at the concert site at Bethel, this may become a reality.
I see a photo of Alan Scott shaking hands like this was his baby. He also declares that this is 'a dream come true'. This from the man who perhaps singelhandedly did the most to discourage people from visiting Sullivan County each August.
Mr. Scott, don't you feel the least bit hypocritical? As I stated in a previous editorial letter, you have jumped on and off more band wagons than Don Imus at a sporting event. But, as time goes by, more people than myself will see through your facade.
Woodstock made Sullivan County a part of history, like it or not. In 1994, your politicians let thousands upon thousands get away and go to Saugarties. I am sure that with a little planning and working with concert principals, this would have been a financial gain for Sullivan County, which is so badly needed. Don't let this continue to happen. Let the concert site be a benefit and not a drain by wasting money trying to keep people away.
But now, let's get on to the positive. Our salvation could be near. Here is a chance to take a giant step towards economic recovery in this area.
Mr. Gerry is the Pied Piper. Rally behind him and support him fully and perhaps Sullivan County can recapture some of its glory from days past.
Mr. Gerry, I extend my personal thanks to you as do all the other Woodstock faithfuls. I am sure there is a place in heaven with your name on it. You will be my personal candidate for Sainthood. You are the answer to the prayers of many. Let no one discourage you in your effort to perserve hallowed ground.
