And shortly after, local religious leaders gave a blessing at the Site and to the small gathering.

And then there was a parade!!! Yea!

Moments later, a convoy of additional troopers appeared at the Site as well as a helicopter from the State Highway patrol. Any cars parked in the small lot at the Monument and on the adjoining roads were advised to leave. Tow trucks were on call to remove anyone not agreeing with the decision. At the same time, all vehicular traffic to the site was blocked from both Highway 17B and from connecting backroads. Barricades were installed on all access roads and trails entering the field itself.

Persons wishing to visit were instructed to find an off-road parking area (the closest was approximately 1 mile down 17B) and then walk back to Hurd road and down to the Site. Not a pleasant jaunt, especially if you happened to be one of many visitors that brought along their children.

Melanie, one of the performers at the original concert was allowed to drive to the Monument where she sang as she has done every year since 1969. Visitors from a national South African Band called 'The Hidden Years' were also allowed to drive rather than walk.
