On Monday Arthur Lee Vassmer, at the age of 72, owner with his brother Fred, of the Vassmer General Store passed on. The store was near the original 1969 Woodstock Concert site on Route 17B.... We probably all shopped there one time or another or stopped by to use the pay phone outside......
Editor's Note:
Sad news...he was an kind, honorable man. If you have seen almost any film or printed material on Woodstock, you would have no doubt have seen or read the interviews with Art Vassmer. The store was down the street from the El Monoco Hotel ('Woodstock Central' during the early construction). Initially, I'm sure he was surprised (maybe even a little hesitate) about having his town overrun by the dreaded hippy element. But very early on, actions and interactions showed him there was no cause for alarm. He became a STAUNCH believer in the essential human kindness, respect and honesty seen in those who set up and attended Woodstock. We thank Richie for sending us this announcement.
